Former Marvel Comics president Stan Lee has cancelled his appearance at Comic-Con after being struck down by laryngitis.

The 91-year-old comic book icon planned to attend the San Diego festival for signings today and tomorrow, but has been forced to let down his established fanbase.

A spokesperson said that Lee had “regrettably had to cancel his appearances”.

“Stan is otherwise well and in good health, though he is disappointed to miss the event and wishes everyone a great time,” the statement read, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Lee has missed only a handful of Comic-Cons since it began in 1970 and was one of the first to help the festival attract Hollywood’s attention.

Lee will next be seen starring in a cameo role in Guardians of the Galaxy, due for UK release on 31 July.

Comic-Con is playing host to a strong range of TV and movie casts and creators this weekend, with Benedict Cumberbatch, Christopher Nolan and Matthew McConaughey all inciting excitement yesterday.

The cast of Game of Thrones are expected for a panel on Thursday, before Marvel’s presentation in the main hall on Saturday and the first trailer for Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.
