The final trailer for Matt Reeves’ forthcoming prequel, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, has been released ahead of the movie’s debut this summer.

The new teaser clip opens with shots of an apocalyptic North America over-run with apes after they took over from humans in the wake of deadly simian flu during 2011’s Planet of the Apes reboot, Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

“Apes, do not, want war,” leader of the apes Caesar, played by Andy Serkis, declares at the start of the trailer.

“We both have families, you want to protect yours, I want to protect mine, it’s our only chance for peace,” adds Jason Clarke’s Malcolm in a desperate bid for reconciliation.

But Gary Oldman’s Dreyfus is set on ending the ape race and save humanity, refusing to believe that they are anything more than “animals” after he lost his family and friends to the virus.

Cue plenty of machine guns, explosions and destruction as violence between the species becomes inevitable.

The Dawn storyline does not pick up immediately after Rise, continuing a decade later.

The official synopsis reads: “A growing nation of genetically-evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier.

“They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species.”

Judy Greer and Keri Russell also star but James Franco will not be reprising his role as scientist Will Rodman.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is due in UK cinemas on 17 July.
