Doctor Foster is officially getting the second series TV fans have been hoping for.

Suranne Jones will be returning in the lead after the first season finale in September drew a massive 10.1 million viewers, making it the highest rated BBC drama episode after Call the Midwife.

Jones plays GP Gemma, who discovers her husband is having an affair and seeks her calculated revenge. The second run will focus on the aftermath.

“I am thrilled to announce we will all be reunited to tell Gemma’s next chapter,” Jones said.

“I can’t wait for the audience who invested in these characters to find out the explosive twists and turns. Now we can look into what happens to a woman after divorce, deceit and revenge has taken its toll.”

Many fans were delighted by the news but others expressed doubt on Twitter over whether the show warranted a follow-up.

Writer and creator Mike Bartlett said he was “astounded” by the positive reaction to the first series. and is looking forward to continuing Gemma’s story.

“Her life in Parminster may look better on the surface but as she will discover to her cost, every action has its consequences eventually,” he said. “No one comes through hell unscathed.”

Elsewhere, Jones has been cast in a three-part special of crime drama Scott & Bailey, with filming set to begin soon.
