EastEnders star Ben Hardy is being lined-up for a role in upcoming X-Men film Apocalypse, reports suggest.

The 23-year-old actor plays Peter Beale in the BBC soap but could soon be swapping Albert Square for life as a young Cyclops in the hit movie franchise.

Timothee Chalamet and Charlie Rowe, known for Interstellar and Neverland respectively, are also in the running, according to The Wrap.

The new film is expected to focus on the relationship between Magneto and Mystique, played by screen favourites Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence, but further plot details are yet to emerge.

The only other story element we know is given away by the movie’s title – the X-Men will do battle with their long-time enemy, immortal mutant Apocalypse, ten years after the events of Days of Future Past.

James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult and Evan Peters will all reprise their roles, with Channing Tatum and Hugh Jackman rumoured for appearances.

Director Bryan Singer is also searching for an actress to play Cyclops' on-off lover Jean Grey, with Chloe Grace Moretz, Hailee Steinfeld and Elle Fanning all being considered for the part.

X-Men: Apocalypse is due to hit UK cinemas on 19 May 2016.
