Eddie the Eagle trailer lands, Taron Egerton takes on the beloved British ski jumper

A trailer for the feel-good biopic Eddie the Eagle has landed; with Taron Egerton taking on the beloved British ski jumper.

Eddie 'The Eagle' Edwards has gone down in British sports history after becoming the first British competitor at Olympic ski jumping at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Canada; even though he came last in both 70m and 90m events. His failures transformed him into a media obsession around the globe, with the athlete even ending up on The Tonight Show.

Edwards has become a cultural symbol for everything the British spirit represents, of insurmountable perseverance and optimism in the face of impossible odds. Indeed, he's the ultimate sports underdog, having made it to the Winter Games without any outside funding; and with the addition of being 20lb heavier than his competitors and possessing an extreme farsightedness that forced him to constantly wear glasses, even on his jumps.

Cinema loves its underdogs; so, it was almost inevitable that Edwards' story would eventually make it to the screen. And Sunshine on Leith's director Dexter Fletcher is the one to do it. Kingsman Secret Service's Taron Egerton is bringing excitable, goofy charm to the role of Edwards; Hugh Jackman's on board to play his hard drinking, embittered American coach Bronson Peary; plus, the legendary Christopher Walken is in for good measure.

Eddie the Eagle hits UK theatres 1 April.
