It's been five years since David Fincher's adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and word on a follow-up has been relatively quiet ever since.

Recently sneaking under the doorframe was the news that a sequel was on the way but instead of going in sequence (The Girl who Played with Fire), the project will be an adaptation of fourth novel in the Millennium series, The Girl in the Spider's Web, which was released September 2015.

The novel was written by David Lagercrantz following the death of the original trilogy's author, Stieg Larsson, in 2004.

Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig starred in Fincher's murder mystery thriller which itself was a remake of the Swedish film that made a star of Noomi Rapace (Prometheus). The project is expected to move ahead without both Bond actor Craig and Mara whose upcoming credits include Lion and Una.

The writer's BBC Two period drama Peaky Blinders has been confirmed to return for a fourth and fifth season with star Cillian Murphy.

A filming date for The Girl in the Spider's Web is yet to be announced.
