Leonardo DiCaprio won his second Golden Globe Award at the ceremony last night for his role in The Wolf of Wall Street.

Accepting the award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture (Comedy or Musical), DiCaprio said: “I never would have thought that I’d win Best Actor for a comedy.”

The 39-year-old actor also thanked The Wolf of Wall Street director Martin Scorsese for his “ mentorship”, saying he had “influenced everybody in this room” with his visionary film making.

In the film, DiCaprio plays stockbroker Jordan Belfort, who fraudulently make millions of dollars before going to prison for refusing to co-operate in a 1990’s securities fraud case.

DiCaprio beat off competition in the Best Actor category from fellow nominees Oscar Isaac for Inside Llewyn Davis, Joaquin Phoenix for Her, and Christian Bale for American Hustle.

Tina Fey welcomed DiCaprio to the stage, telling the audience: “ And now, like a supermodel’s vagina, let’s all give a warm welcome to Leonardo DiCaprio.”

The actor seemed unaffected by the joke, and simply brushed it off with a blush and a thumbs up.

DiCaprio attended the awards ceremony with his mother Irmelin, leaving his 21-year-old girlfriend Toni Garrn at home.

Although DiCaprio has been nominated for ten Golden Globes in the past 15 years, it is only his second Golden Globe win. He last won the award for Best Actor for his role in The Aviator in 2005.

There are hopes that he may now be on track to win his first Oscar in March, with the Golden Globes providing the most reliable indicator for Academy Award wins.
