Golden Globes: The Shape of Water leads the race with seven nominations

Another year, another award season's ready to begin.

Kicking everything off, as always, comes the Golden Globes — a lavish, booze-filled affair featuring every well-known actor under the sun dressed up to the nines.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s annual ceremony looks set to become especially intriguing this year, Hollywood having been rocked by sexual harassment scandals and the best picture winner’s everything but secure.

So, what do you need to know about the extravaganza? Here’s a quick catch-up on all the major points.

When and what time are the Golden Globes?

This year’s ceremony, the 75th ever Golden Globes, takes place Sunday, 7 January, at 5:00pm PT / 8:00pm with an hour of red carpet. For those of us based in the UK, that means the red carpet kicks off at midnight, the awards starting at 01:00am. The event should last around three hours.

How to watch

Americans can watch the ceremony on NBC or through subscriptions to Hulu with Live TV plan, Sling TV, or YouTube TV. Unfortunately, for the rest of the world, there’s no way to watch at the moment — The Independent will be running a live-blog which will keep you updated.

Who’s hosting the show?

Following on from last year’s host Jimmy Fallon comes Seth Meyers, a fellow late-night host whose commentary on Donald Trump has been a highlight over the past year. Meyers was part of the Golden Globes’ writing team when Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosted in 2013, 2014, and 2015.

Who is presenting each award?

While many more names will be announced, those already named include Gal Gadot, Kerry Washington, Amy Poehler, Kelly Clarkson, Halle Berry, Penelope Cruz, Seth Rogan, Halle Berry, Darren Criss, Isabelle Huppert, Hugh Grant, Christina Hendricks, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Alicia Vikander, Sharon Stone, Shirley Maclaine, Ricky Martin, Sarah Jessica Parker, Greta Gerwig, Edgar Ramírez, J.K. Simmons, Dakota Johnson, Andy Samberg, Carol Burnett, Neil Patrick Harris, Chris Hemsworth, Emma Watson, Kit Harington, Emilia Clarke, Jennifer Aniston, Emma Stone, Helen Mirren, and Angelina Jolie. Who will win?

For a detailed analysis on our predictions, click through here.

Who was snubbed?

A couple of much-hyped movies failed to get nominated, most notably The Big Sick, which was expected to land in the Best Comedy category. Wonder Woman has also been highly talked-about yet Gal Gadot and Patty Jenkins failed to get nominations. There was also The Florida Project, which only saw Willem Dafoe being nominated for Best Supporting Actor, while Tiffany Haddish, was thought to be in the running for Girls Trip.

For the Television, the biggest omission was The Independent’s number one show of 2017 The Leftovers, which left many people surprised. HBO’s The Deuce was also omitted, while Twin Peaks only picked up one nomination — Kyle MacLachlan for leading actor.
