As impressive as many of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's films have been, they are almost all guilty of introducing elements relating to its other franchises in a bid to set up whatever's to come next.

Guardians of the Galaxy, released in 2014, was almost the exception to the rule; one of the best Marvel films to date, it was set - for the most part - a literal world away from Iron Man, Captain America and co, telling the story of Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) and a ragtag bunch of characters. It was when the film attempted to integrate Avengers villain Thanos that it struggled.

Thankfully, director James Gunn has confirmed that the sequel, due out in 2017, will serve as a standalone Marvel adventure unrelated to any of the other films.

Speaking during a Facebook Q&A, the filmmaker was asked about the appearance of Infinity Stones in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. He responded that "...there will be no infinity stones in Vol. 2."

Screen Crush reports that another fan then went on to ask about the inclusion of Infinity Gauntlets, following which Gunn revealed: “There will be infinity nothing. It’s a story about the Guardians, and isn’t meant to lead to anything else.”

There's a chance he could be bluffing, but - for now - it looks as though the follow-up, starring Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper, will be more of the same with the Avengers references stripped away.

A trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was shown at last month's Comic-Con 2016 where it was revealed that Kurt Russell would be playing Star-Lord's father Ego, a talking planet who - in the film - will take the guise of a human.
