Hacksaw Ridge: Mel Gibson's new war film gets a trailer

The biographical film tells the story of conscientious objector Desmond T Doss

Mel Gibson has returned to the director's chair for Hacksaw Ridge, the story of WWII Army Medic Desmond T. Doss who became the first conscientious objector in US history to be awarded the Medal of Honour.

Doss, who served during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945, refused to kill of carry weapons because of his religious beliefs.

Andrew Garfield will head up Gibson's new film alongside Vince Vaughn, Sam Worthington and Teresa Palmer.

Hacksaw Ridge is Gibson's first film as director since Apocalypto in 2006. Previous to that, he directed Braveheart and 2004's bankable yet controversial religious film The Passion of the Christ; a sequel is reportedly in the works.

The Australian actor-director, whose most recent list of acting credits include The Expendables 3 and upcoming action thriller Blood Father, shot to fame following the release of 1979's Mad Max.

Garfield will also be seen in new Martin Scorsese film Silence alongside Liam Neeson and Adam Driver.

Hacksaw Ridge will be released in the US on 4 November. A UK release date is yet to be announced.
