The Inbetweeners 2 has taken more than £12.5 million across the UK in its opening weekend, making it the best debut so far this year.

The strong weekend follows the biggest ever opening day for comedy in the UK on Wednesday, when the sequel took £2.75m.

Its stellar reviews from critic and cinemagoer alike could spur it on to eclipse its predecessor, which took £45m at the box office in 2011.

The Inbetweeners 2 finds Jay on a gap year in Australia, with Will, Neil and Simon flying out to join in his exploits and misadventures.

Speaking to the Telegraph at the film's premiere, actor Joe Thomas (Simon) said of the sequel: "Joke for joke, this is funnier."

The cast, now approaching their thirties, suggested we won't see an Inbetweeners 3 however, with Simon Bird (Will) saying: "Once you see the film you'll see it feels like they've all moved on with their lives, so unfortunately this is it. It's a great way of saying goodbye."

Thomas added: "We've had a great time making this film but it can't keep going forever. This is probably it but it's a nice way to go."
