The comedy's creators Damon Beesley and Iain Morris confirmed the new location in a statement today.
“We can’t say too much as we don’t want to spoil the jokes for you but what we can exclusively reveal is there will be kangaroos and Australians and possibly koalas,” they said in a statement on the show's Facebook page.
“Oh and obviously Jay, Will, Neil and Simon, providing they’re let into the country. Thanks so much for all your support, we’re hoping to deliver a film that you’ll enjoy even more than the last one.”
Spencer Millman, who has worked on The Mighty Boosh and Man Down, will be producing the sequel.
Rumours that the show would be heading to Australia had been circulating for a while before the news was confirmed this morning.
Reactions have been mixed, with most fans excited by the announcement but others concerned the sequel will be a flop. “Hopefully it will be better than the last film. Series was amazing, film was cringe,” one fan wrote under the statement.
Based on the E4 sitcom, the 2011 comedy film starring Simon Bird, Joe Thomas, James Buckley and Blake Harrison as awkward, carefree teenagers on a school-leavers holiday to Crete was a huge summer hit.
The first Inbetweeners movie took £45 million at the box office to become the most successful British comedy film of all time.
