Inbetweeners star Simon Bird to host British Independent Film Awards

The star of one of this year's biggest blockbusters has been chosen to host the British Independent Film Awards.

Simon Bird, who plays Will in the hit E4 comedy series The Inbetweeners, said he was the obvious choice to present following his role in “experimental art-house piece” The Inbetweeners 2.

“I was the obvious choice to emcee this event celebrating cutting-edge independent cinema,” he joked in a statement.

The nominations, which were announced earlier this week, see Pride, Mr Turner, The Imitation Game, Calvary and ’71 up for best British independent film.

Keira Knightley and Benedict Cumberbatch have been nominated for their starring roles in The Imitation Game, while Imelda Staunton, Andrew Scott and Ben Schnetzer were recognised for their supporting roles in Pride.

Schnetzer, who plays HIV positive LGBT campaigner Mark in Pride, has also been nominated in the most promising newcomer category alongside Cara Delevingne for her performance in The Face of An Angel.

The comedian and writer will host the 17th British Independent Film Awards on 7 December.
