Everyone who has ever asked themselves what it would be like to see Danny DeVito inhabit the body of Dwayne Johnson will be pleased by the first trailer for Jumanji: The Next Level, which answers that very question.
The first look at the sequel to the surprise 2017 smash, itself a spiritual sequel to the 1995 Jumanji starring Robin Williams, sees Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillen and Jack Black once again playing avatars inside the Jumanji video game, all of whom are inhabited by a quartet of plucky teenagers. But this time DeVito and Danny Glover get in on the action, too, as grandparents who stumble into the game and wind up inhabiting Johnson and Hart’s bodies.
Based on the trailer, Hart makes for a far more convincing imitator of Glover than Johnson does DeVito. But they’re gamely supported by a host of appealing supporting actors, among them an army of angry monkeys, a giant snake that appears to swallow Black’s head whole, and franchise newcomer Awkwafina, who is glimpsed briefly.
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle proved a runaway hit in 2017, grossing nearly a billion dollars worldwide and financially eclipsing the 1995 Jumanji.
Jumanji: The Next Level arrives in cinemas 13 December.
