Kirstie Alley has caused a Twitter storm after saying she’s voting for Donald Trump “because he’s not a politician”.

The Cheers actor, who also starred in hit Eighties film Look Who’s Talking, is a known Trump supporter, but struck a nerve with her latest declaration.

Writing on Twitter, Alley said: “I’m voting for @realDonaldTrump because he’s NOT a politician. I voted for him four years ago for this reason and shall vote for him again for this reason.”

“He gets things done quickly and he will turn the economy around quickly. There you have it, folks, there you have it.”

Swiftly after posting the tweet, Alley’s name started trending with many criticising the reasoning behind her decision.

A heap of Twitter users pointed out what they believed to be a flaw in her words of choosing.

“But he hasn’t gotten anything done,” one person said. “I voted for him four years ago too and realised my mistake and voted for Joe Biden. We can dialogue respectfully if you like and I won’t force your vote but just hope you think about it.”

Many others – including director Judd Apatow – waded in by saying they prefer Alley’s Cheers co-star Shelley Long, whose name soon began trending on the social media site as a result.

Some jumped to Alley’s defence, arguing that the actor is entitled to her opinion regardless of how she reached it.

Speaking about the backlash to her post, the actor – who played Rebecca Howe in the beloved sitcom – wrote: “Don’t think I’ve ever seen so much name-calling in my life.”

Last November, Alley revealed she used to be addicted to cocaine in the 1970s, while celebrating 40 years of sobriety.

She also admitted to being attracted to John Travolta while the pair were making Look Who’s Talking in 1989.
