Kung Fury: Crazy Eighties action movie debuts on YouTube thanks to Kickstarter funding
The wacky film stars arcade-robots, vikings and mutants...
It’s the biggest over-the-top Eighties-inspired action movie to be released in years, but chances are you haven’t heard of it.
Kung Fury, which features dinosaurs, Nazis, Norse gods and a super kung fu-cop, has premiered on YouTube after reaching its crowd-funding goal on Kickstarter.
Swedish-born director David Sandberg, a lifelong fan of Eighties films and TV shows, raised $630,019 on Kickstarter to make the movie, which he promised to release for free on the internet.
The 30 minute film, which follows Kung Fury as he travels back in time from Eighties Miami to kill Adolf Hitler, aka Kung Führer, has been watched over 1.5 million times in 24 hours since it was first uploaded to YouTube.
Kung Fury had its big screen debut at Cannes, with Variety calling it “the most awesome project” at the film festival.
If that’s not enough to whet your appetite, Kung Fury also features an accompanying music video starring none other than Baywatch legend David Hasselhoff.
The actor is said to have been persuaded to star in the music video after watching just 15 seconds of the film’s trailer. He also makes a cameo appearance in the film (bafflingly enough) as the onboard computer for Kung Fury’s Ferrari. Don't ask.
