Maleficent tops US box office as X-Men: Days of Future Past becomes highest grossing X-Men movie to date
Disney's Jolie dark fariytale casts a spell at cinemas
Maleficent has shot to the top of the US box office, with the Angelina Jolie-starring Disney film grossing $70m in its first weekend in cinemas.
The re-working of Sleeping Beauty ousted X-Men: Days of Future Past, but this is unlikely to bother 20th Century Fox, with the sequel having already grossed half a billion dollars worldwide – already beating all previous X-Men films despite this only being its second weekend.
Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane's new comedy western A Million Ways To Die In The West entered the top ten at number three, taking $17million, while Godzilla slipped down to four ($12million).
There were no other new entries, with The Amazing Spider-Man 2 continuing to perform well despite being released back at the start of May, grossing $3.7million.
The US weekend box office top ten for June 1 (studio estimates):
1 (-) Maleficent - $70,000,000
