Michael Gandolfini, the son of James Gandolfini, will reportedly play a young version of Tony Soprano in the upcoming Sopranos prequel film.

James Gandolfini died in 2013 and played the infamous mobster in the acclaimed TV series throughout its six seasons.

“It’s a profound honour to continue my dad’s legacy while stepping into the shoes of a young Tony Soprano,” Michael said in a statement.

“I’m thrilled that I am going to have the opportunity to work with [Sopranos creator] David Chase and the incredible company of talent he has assembled for The Many Saints of Newark.”

ET reports that Michael Gandolfini was cast as the role of young Soprano after an extensive audition process.

The prequel film, titled The Many Saints of Newark, is set in 1967 amid the Newark riots, which the character Livia was seen watching live on television during a flashback in the episode “Down Neck”.

Alessandro Nivola, Vera Farmiga, Jon Bernthal, Billy Magnussen and Corey Stoll are among the previously announced cast members. Find out more about the prequel here.
