The Matrix 4: Yahya Abdul-Mateen II set to join Keanu Reeves in new Wachowski sequel

Some believe he could play a young Morpheus

A fourth Matrix film is currently in the works with both Keanu Reeves and Carrie Ann Moss returning, and another actor set to join them in the lead roles.

According to Variety, Warner Bros and director Lana Wachowski have secretly signed up Aquaman star Yahya Abbdul-Mateen II to appear in the new sequel.

Original reports stated that Michael B Jordan was being eyed for a role in the new follow-up that was announced back in August.

The project, co-written by Wachowski, Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell, will be going into production early 2020.

Plot details are currently unknown, but it’s believed Abdul-Mateen II could be playing a young version of Morpheus, the character played by Laurence Fishburne in the original trilogy.

Rumours surrounding a new Matrix film began swirling when John Wick director Chad Stahelski let slip that the Wachowskis were planning a fourth film, although his comments were later claimed to be “hypothetical”.

Reeves wasn’t the first choice to play Neo in the Matrix trilogy, which ended with The Matrix Revolutions in 2003: Will Smith was approached for the role and recently revealed why he turned it down.

Abudl-Mateen II’s other credits include The Get Down, Us, Black Mirror and Damon Lindelof’s HBO show Watchmen, which will premiere in the UK on Sky Atlantic on 22 October.
