It could be argued that Netflix has become the world's leading streaming service over the past five years, getting first choice for TV and film properties ahead of any other.

There's one series, however, that it didn't have a chance at acquiring - The Great British Bake Off.

Chief content officer Ted Sarandos has expressed his disappointment in an interview with The Telegraph.

The Great British Bake Off found itself at the centre of controversy earlier this year when Channel 4 bought the show when Love Productions' contract with the BBC expired.

The move saw the departure of judge Mary Berry as well as TV presenters Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins. It is unknown who'll take over when the revamped series begins but they'll be joined by original judge Paul Hollywood.

Netflix's most recent original series was period drama The Crown starring Claire Foy, Matt Smith and John Lithgow. This week saw the four-part return of beloved series Gilmore Girls.

One British series Netflix managed to poach was Charlie Brooker's dystopian anthology Black Mirror which debuted it's high-rpofile third season in October. You can read our round-up of each episode here.
