He was flanked by a band of accomplished musicians: St. Vincent, Moses Sumney, Chris Thile, alongside frequent Sufjan collaborators Casey Foubert and James McAlister.
The artist's released nine studio albums and a string singles and collaborations, via his own label Asthmatic Kitty, over the past 17 years.
Interestingly, he'd offered an original track titled "Tonya Harding" to the producers of I, Tonya, but was rejected. The track was instead released separately, unrelated to the film, via Asthmatic Kitty Records' YouTube channel.
The night also featured performances from Mary J. Blige, singing "Mighty River" from Mudbound; alongside Miguel and Gael Garcia Bernal, singing "Remember Me" from Coco.
Still to come are performances by Common and Andra Day, performing "Stand Up for Something" from Marshall; with Keala Settle performing "This is Me" from The Greatest Showman.
