Though there’s still no sign of the long-craved Portal 3 video game, it looks like we will be getting a film based around the game.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens director JJ Abrams was asked if there was an update on the long-gestating video game adaptation, along with that of Half-Life, while promoting 10 Cloverfield Lane this week.

"Not yet, but they're in development," he told IGN. "And we've got writers, and we're working on both those stories.”

It’s easy to see how Portal could lend itself to a Looper-esque sci-fi movie, given its dystopian setting and teleporting blaster guns.

Abrams has partnered with developers Valve, and if ever there was a time for them to release Portal 3, the release of a film based on the series would surely be it.

Interestingly, 10 Cloverfield Lane director Dan Trachtenberg broke into the industry thanks to his short fan film Portal: No Escape, so he'd be an obvious choice for the adaptation.

A mini Portal sequel for VR - The Lab - is expected to debut at the 2016 Game Developers Conference this week.
