Last night the photographer Rankin introduced the first six films from Collabor8te, a new scheme set up to help aspiring filmmakers.

Since the UK Film Council was disbanded in 2010, the organisation claims to be the only programme of its kind to find new film-making talent. And is now in its second year of funding films.

The event, sponsored by Nokia, was held at The Regent Street Cinema, which has been described as “the birthplace of British cinema”, and was attended by the likes of Vicky McClure, Pixie Lott and Ashley Walters.

McClure, star of This Is England, was a guest speaker on the night and said that such programmes were vital to young people wanting to work both in front of and behind the camera.

“There isn't a manual to how to make it in the business, so when projects like [this] come along it is an amazing stepping stone for talented people in the UK,” she said.

“Shane Meadows gave me a chance when I was young and opportunities like that don't come around very often. That is why when Rankin told me about Nokia Collabor8te, I jumped at the chance to support.”

The six films are:

Irreversible, written and directed by Lewis Metcalfe

Liar, written by Rory Alexander Stewart and directed by Martin Smith

The Gas Man written and directed by Matt Palmer

The Hungry Corpse, written by James Pout and directed by Gergely Wootsch

Stew and Punch, written and directed by Simon Ellis

Twinkle Twinkle written and directed by Deborah Haywood.
