Star Trek Beyond may have wrapped filming months ago but, for some reason, director Justin Lin has seen fit to add a completely new character in reshoots scheduled to take place this week.

Shohreh Aghdashloo - Oscar-nominated for her role in drama House of Sand and Fog - will play the High Command of the Federation in the third of the rebooted franchise; quite why her character hadn't been introduced before remains a mystery.

The Iranian actor's other credits include popular TV show 24 and SyFy series The Expanse.

Fast & Furious' Lin is on directing duties taking over from JJ Abrams who was the man behind the revamp in 2009 as well as sequel Star Trek Into Darkness in 2013.

Abrams departed the franchise so he could direct another sci-fi film based on a classic property - namely Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Simon Pegg, who plays Scotty, has co-written the script. Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana are all returning with Idris Elba joining them this time around as Krall.

Upon its release back in December, Star Trek Beyond's first trailer was heavily criticised by not only fans but Pegg too.

The film is set to be released on 22 July.
