The latest instalment in the Star Wars franchise looks set to become the 32nd film ever to hit the $1bn mark, and is expected to achieve the feat just in time for New Year's Eve.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi currently boasts worldwide takings of $891.8m, according to Variety.

The Disney-Lucas film is dominating the box office in North America along with Sony's Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle starring Vin Diesel, Jack Black and Karen Gillan.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi has impressed critics but, unusually, divided fans.

Mark Hamill, who returned to play Luke Skywalker, recently expressed regret over commenting publicly on the concerns he had over the storyline where he said the current depiction of Luke was "not my Luke Skywalker".

He later wrote on Twitter: "I regret voicing my doubts & insecurities in public. Creative differences are a common element of any project but usually remain private. All I wanted was to make a good movie.

"I got more than that," he continued, emphasising how he believes director Rian Johnson made "an all-time GREAT one [sic]".
