Thor: Ragnarok may potentially overlap with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

And it's all thanks to a newcomer to the Marvel universe - Pom Klementieff's Mantis

Guardians of the Galaxy has always been deemed as Marvel's outlier of sorts: its space bound adventures really only linked to its greater cinematic universe in the machinations of villain Thanos and presence of an Infinity Stone.

Director James Gunn has promised even more narrative independence in its sequel, telling fans the story will be focused on the Guardians themselves, and that there won't be any more Infinity Stones cropping up in Vol. 2.

Meanwhile, Thor: Ragnarok appears to be establishing something very similar for itself; with director Taika Waititi taking Thor and Hulk far away from Earth's tensions within The Avengers, and launching them into an "intergalactic buddy road movie".

However, that doesn't exactly mean Marvel won't be tempted by the idea of sneaking in some ties to the larger cinematic universe; and, if this rumour is true, both films could very well end up linked to each other.

That Hashtag Show reports Thor: Ragnarok will feature the Cotati, an alien race of telepathic plants which originate from the same planet as the Kree, a race we've already seen onscreen in the form of Guardians of the Galaxy's Ronan the Accuser.

What's particularly interesting is that the Cotati have a strong link with Vol. 2's new character, Pom Klementieff's Mantis; her origins in the comics see her as a human woman believed by the Cotati to be their 'Celestial Madonna', chosen to mate with their elder and birth the 'Celestial Messiah' AKA "the most important being in the universe".

There's no word on whether Mantis herself may appear, but it wouldn't be entirely implausible; if Marvel has any interest in making her a mainstay part of the cinematic universe, it wouldn't be surprising to see her crop up elsewhere in an effort to establish her presence.

Thor: Ragnarok hits UK cinemas 27 October 2017, while Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 hits cinemas 31 July, 2017.
