Wonder Woman actress Gal Gadot has responded to the criticism surrounding her casting, calling it "empty talk".

Fans of the DC Comics character saw the casting decision as misguided, although questions were based less around her fairly short CV and more around the fact that she was "too skinny".

Gadot took on the role of Wonder Woman in the DC Entertainment/Warner Bros film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and will also portray her in a solo film that will also use a female director.

Henry Cavill will return as Superman in the sequel, with Jesse Eisenberg playing villain Lex Luthor.

Speaking to Robot Underdog, Gadot addressed the personal attacks on her ability to play the character head-on.

"They said that I was too skinny and my boobs were too small… They said my head was too big and my body was like a broomstick.

"I can take anything. It’s just empty talk. I can understand that part of what I’m doing means being exposed. And part of being exposed is being under fire."

She added that when she was younger it was more difficult to take criticism, but now she finds it mostly amusing.

Director Zack Snyder said the actress had a "magical quality" that makes her perfect for the role.

"Wonder Woman is arguably one of the most powerful female characters of all time and a fan favourite in the DC Universe.

"Not only is Gal an amazing actress, but she also has that magical quality that makes her perfect for the role," he said.

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice arrives in cinemas on 25 March, 2016. Wonder Woman is due for release on 23 June, 2017.
