Alas Wonder Woman won’t be gay in the film, will fall in love with Chris Pine instead

Another DC/Marvel movie, another straight protagonist

The news that Wonder Woman should be considered openly queer in the DC comics was met with cheers from fans, but it doesn’t look like her long-standing bisexuality will be referenced in the upcoming Gal Godot-Starring movie. Instead, she will very boringly fall in love with the very boring Chris Pine.

"It's not in the film," Gadot told Yahoo after being asked about it. "In the film, she falls in love with a man [Chris Pine's fighter pilot Steve Trevor]. In general, I read this article as well.

"I think Wonder Woman is all about heart and she cares for people without paying too much attention to gender. That's an option - but we never experienced that."

Wonder Woman wrapped long before DC writer Greg Rucka’s comments about the character’s sexuality, but he also pointed out that her fondness for men and women has been very obvious for years.

"This is inherently the problem with Diana: we've had a long history of people - for a variety of reasons, including sometimes pure titillation, which I think is the worst reason - say, 'Ooo. Look. It's the Amazons. They're gay'," he said.

"And when you start to think about giving the concept of Themyscira its due, the answer is, 'How can they not all be in same sex relationships?' Right? It makes no logical sense otherwise.

"It's supposed to be paradise. You're supposed to be able to live happily. You're supposed to be able - in a context where one can live happily, and part of what an individual needs for that happiness is to have a partner - to have a fulfilling, romantic and sexual relationship. And the only options are women.

"But an Amazon doesn't look at another Amazon and say, 'You're gay.' They don't. The concept doesn't exist. Now, are we saying Diana has been in love and had relationships with other women? As Nicola and I approach it, the answer is obviously yes."

Wonder Woman opens in cinemas on 2 June, 2017.
