On Monday night (26 February), A Wrinkle in Time premiered in Hollywood, Ava DuVernay unleashing her adaptiation of the visionary tale into the world.

Soon after the event, the social media embargo dropped, some critics revealing their thoughts on the Oprah Winfrey, Chris Pine, and Reese Witherspoon-starring blockbuster.

Overall, the reaction has been mixed, many people praising the visuals while others note certain themes do not translate from book to screen.

Those to praise the movie include author Roxanne Grey, who wrote on Twitter: “We went to the Wrinkle In Time premiere tonight. What a lovely, gorgeously shot, inspiring movie. Absolutely go see it.”

Queen Sugar showrunner Kat Chandler gave equal praise: “With extraordinary vision and a big pounding heart, A Wrinkle in Time is a gorgeous love letter to the next generation of warriors.”

There were also some slightly more mixed reviews, Vox critic Todd VanDerWerff writing: “It’s going to be divisive, but I really liked it. It has its problems, but I liked how much it didn’t just wear its heart on its sleeve but wore its heart as a shirt.”

Gregory Ellwood of The Playlist praised the songs and DuVerney, but concluded: “It’s intentions are noble, but this adaptation doesn’t work. Movie has a ton of issues.”

The full review embargo drops on the 7 March, reaching UK cinemas in the 23 March and US on the 9 March.
