xXx 3: The Return Of Xander Cage - Trailer 2

With as third xXx film on the horizon a brand new trailer has been released showing Vin Diesel in action as Xander Cage - and it seems that, despite it being 15 years since the character's appearance - interest in the character seems to have reached a fresh peak.

The second trailer for The Return of Xander Cage dropped via Diesel on Facebook Live and has since amassed over a staggering 100 million views.

These figures seem to signal the star power possessed by Diesel whose other film franchises include Fast & Furious and Guardians of the Galaxy. Deadline reports that in comparison, the most successful trailer of all time was the in-no-way-modest Fifty Shades Darker which racked up 114 million in 24 hours.

The first xXx film was released by Sony in 2002 following The Fast and the Furious' success in 2000. Diesel was unable to return for poorly-received sequel State of the Union due to filming commitments - Ice Cube starred instead - but with this level of excitement building for the third entry, it's fair to deduce that xXx minus Diesel doesn't work.

It also signals that the audience for extreme action films is just as strong as it has been throughout the decade; only last year did Fast & Furious 7 become one PF the highest-grossing films of all time (it currently sits at number six).

The Return of Xander Cage will follow Diesel's athlete-turned-National Security Agency spy alongside fellow returning cast member Samuel L. Jackson who plays NSA agent Augustus Gibbons.

Also along for the ride is Toni Collette and an assortment of recognisable faces from the world of US TV including Ruby Rose (Orange is the New Black), Nina Dobrev (The Vampire Diaries) and the Hound himself, Rory McCann (Game of Thrones).

XX 3 is released in the US on 15 January.
