The 102-year-old Portuguese director Manoel de Oliveira has started work on a new film at a studio in Paris, his Portuguese production company said Friday.

Shooting on "Gabo and the Shadow", an adaption of the play by the Portuguese writer Raul Brandau, started Thursday and is set to wrap up at the end of October, the O som e a furia production company told AFP.

The cast of the dramatic-comedy includes French-British actor Michael Lonsdale, Italy's Claudia Cardinale and Jean Moreau of France.

Since his first film, "Labour on the Dorou river" (1931), Oliveira has shot some 50 features and documentaries. His most recent film, "The Strange Case of Angelica", was shown at the Cannes Film Festival last year.
