Mike Newell's adaptation, apart from a bland performance from Jeremy Irvine as the endlessly striving, rather unsympathetic Pip, is perfectly acceptable Sunday-night entertainment. It benefits from two decent supporting performances, from Robbie Coltrane as the astute Mr Jaggers and Jason Flemyng as kind blacksmith Joe. Helena Bonham Carter's swivel-eyed turn as Miss Havisham is a hoot.
