Bart Layton's deeply unsettling documentary centres on a Texan family grieving over the disappearance of Nicholas, a blue-eyed, fair-haired 13-year-old who went missing in 1994.
More than three years later, the Barclay family receive a call from Spain claiming that Nicholas has been found. However, the "boy" in question is brown-eyed, dark-haired and in actual fact Frederic Bourdin, a 23-year-old French conman pretending to be the lost American, and the Barclay family are taken in by the Walter Mitty-like fraud. A gripping and poignant slice of American/French gothic.
