Dustin Hoffman’s corny directorial debut is more suited to TV than film, but it does benefit from the poignant performances of Tom Courtenay and the peerless Maggie Smith.

The pair play former lovers lumped together in a bucolic retirement home for renowned opera singers. Pauline Collins and (a deeply irritating) Billy Connolly play their old friends, and the quartet are asked to reprise former glories at a gala concert. Not much plot so speak of and not as moving as The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.
