Michael Winterbottom tackles Thomas Hardy for a third time (after Jude and The Claim, his take on The Mayor of Casterbridge) with this suitably grim version of Tess of the D'Urbervilles, set in modern-day India.

Frieda Pinto plays Trishna, the daughter of a rickshaw driver, who falls for Riz Ahmed's well-heeled British businessman. She, of course, harbours a dark secret. The leads try their best to spark in this pretty but underwhelming tragic tale.
