BBC's wildly successful Sunday-night entertainment is certainly preferable to the cloying Lark Rise to Candleford and it doesn't flinch at portraying domestic abuse in late 1950s Poplar.
However, this superior soap about the midwives and nuns of Nonnatus House is still defiantly worthy and faintly patronising. Here, Jenny (played by the winning Jessica Raine) and her fellow angels (including Miranda Hart and Pam Ferris) tackle Swedish cargo ships, tuberculosis and quite a bit of cake.
