DVD: Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, For retail & rental (Optimum)
Guy Pearce and Katie Holmes are renovating a gothic mansion when Pearce's young daughter spots the scuttling goblins which live in the basement.
Too scary for children, but too child-centric for adults, this repetitive remake of a 1973 made-for-TV movie is a let-down for a film that's co-written and "presented" by Guillermo del Toro. It never establishes what the beasties are, what they want, or what they can do.
