Winter in Wartime (12a)

Stories of resistance in Nazi-occupied Europe are gaining the status of a genre.

This latest, from Holland, recounts the tale of a small-town adolescent boy Michiel (Martin Lakemeier) who, ashamed of his mayor father's outward friendliness to the Germans, dreams of fighting back, and has his chance when he stumbles on a wounded British airman hiding out in the woods. But he then finds himself in the Greene-like predicament of helping and betraying at the same time. The atmosphere of dread and suspicion is nicely caught by the director Martin Koolhoven, so too the reality of wartime shortages, and if the plot bends towards melodramatic shades then it still never forfeits our interest.
