Grammy-winning songstress Adele is queen of the tearjerker

Despite previous complaints of Adele being a "boring" choice for Glastonbury's Saturday night headliner, her back catalogue consisting of mainly "miserable" songs - something she pokes fun at during her set - the songstress proved them wrong, winning over Worthy Farm with her charisma and charm.

For those already converted to the church of Adele, it was an emotional journey; tears were shed, marriage proposals made, and many hugs received.

The Independent just happened to be stood in amongst a mixture of both casual fans, hardcore fans and non-believers; from all, things got both cheesy and soppy very quickly. Here are 11 of the best things we overheard.

  1.  "Oh my God. I can't believe we're here, this is already the best day of my life" - One young fan amongst her emotional friends just after "Hello", her first song.

  2. "If my girlfriend was here, I'd be down on one knee right now, boys. Even in front of the lads that would happen" - A man in his early twenties among other, very similar, friends.

  3. "Will you marry me?" - Following the sentiments of the aforementioned lad, one guy gets down on one knee and proposes. The lovers are lit up by hundreds of phones racing to film the occasion as the crowd roars with approval, nudging his partner to say yes.

  4. "That was the most beautiful thing I've ever seen" - The group of friends mentioned in number one are nearly all crying by this point; as the newly engaged lovers hold each other, also crying (it was a definite yes).

  5. "She's got a proper Cockney twang. Who the f*ck knew" - A man from somewhere behind says of Adele, eliciting laughs from all around.

  6. "You know what? I don't think I've ever hated anyone. Ain't that nice" - Another man from behind says after Adele asks the crowd to think of someone they dislike intensely, referring to the subject of one of her new songs.

  7. "I f*cking love you man" - Someone next to me while giving me a hug; it's a loving, genuine embrace

  8. "I love her so much. She's so kind and nice. She's the mum I want" - Things are getting emotional for a woman stood nearby

  9. "This is the greatest moment of my life too, Adele" - Tears are quite literally running down a person's face.

  10. "She's bringing everyone together. How is she even doing that?" - The singalongs have enamoured one new fan.

  11. "That was the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. Now to get through this f*cking mud" - On the journey out by a converted camper.
