Old stories ignite new passions as Oliver Knussen conducts Angelika Kirchschlager in The Rape of Lucretia, and Barbara Hannigan, James Gilchrist and Jasper de Waal join Amsterdam Sinfonietta for Les Illuminations and Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings.

There's pomp and penitence as Antonio Pappano conducts Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle and Philippe Herreweghe conducts Dvorák's Stabat Mater. Elsewhere, Richard Egarr tickles Bach's English Suites, the Dunedin Consort and Polyphony go head to head with their recordings of the St John Passion, and Jordi Savall leads Le Concert des Nations in the Mass in B minor.

Robin Ticciati conducts Karen Cargill and the SCO in Berlioz's Nuits d'Eté. Roberta Invernizzi and I Turchini trace the career of one of Handel's leading ladies in Il Viaggio di Faustina Bordoni, and Vox Luminis contrast music from the funerals of Queen Elizabeth I in 1603 and Queen Mary in 1695. Joshua Bell directs the Academy of St Martin in the Fields in Beethoven's Fourth and Seventh Symphonies, Alexei Lubimov plays the Waldstein Sonata on an 1802 Erard, while the second volume of the Belcea Quartet's Beethoven cycle includes the "Grosse Fuge", and Barry Douglas continues his survey of Brahms's piano music.
