This year's Brit Award nominations highlight the strength of new music, with breakthrough acts Bastille, Disclosure and Rudimental dominating the British Group and Album categories.

Best of all was John Grant's unexpected – and hugely deserved – nomination in the International Male Solo Artist category alongside giants Eminem, Justin Timberlake, Bruno Mars and Drake.

His album Pale Green Ghosts appeared in many a best of 2013 list. Unsurprisingly, his March date at London's Roundhouse is now sold out. He's just put out a video to the album's closing track, "Glacier". A pastiche of the history of the gay rights struggle, it lends more poignance to an already powerful and emotive song. How I'd love to see Grant win.

Gig of the week

Post-rock band Mogwai start their tour in Newcastle on Wednesday, followed by two nights at London's Royal Festival Hall. Expect tracks from their excellent new album, Rave Tapes (which they're streaming now).
