After opening the World Cup in an unflattering pair of white trousers, Pitbull is to return to the world’s stage again to host the American Music Awards next month.

The “Timber” rapper will host the awards for the second year running for US network ABC.

Pitbull will also perform at the ceremony alongside Charli XCX, with more performers to be confirmed in the next month.

In a statement, Pitbull said: “World, who would have thought Pitbull hosting the AMAs two years in a row. The harder I work, the luckier I get.

“Thank you ABC and Dick Clark Productions for the amazing opportunity – more than anything let’s get ready to have fun.”

He signed off the statement with his signature “Dale!”, which roughly translates to “do it” or “give it” in Spanish.

Iggy Azalea leads the nominations for this year’s award with six nods, ahead of John Legend, Katy Perry and Pharrell Williams, who each have five nominations.

Unlike the Grammys, the American Music Awards are voted for by the US public.

The awards began on ABC in 1973 when the network’s contract to present the Grammy Awards expired.

The American Music Awards 2014 will be held on Sunday 23 November.
