If you are old enough to remember the golden age of disco, you will be familiar with the term “remix”. These days (try to keep up) the trend is more for the ­re-edit. The point is, the veteran house DJ/producer Ashley Beedle is about to release Message in the Music, a collection of re-edits of a surprisingly eclectic range of tracks from the Fall (above) to Bill Withers to Ace. Watch the video for Beedle’s re-edit of Family’s funk-rock classic “Burlesque” here. Groovy.

Morecambe sounds

Indie landfill, death of the guitar band, and so on and bore off. But can the standard guitar-bass-drums template still excite? Enter the Heartbreaks, a band from Morecambe who have the attracted fans from Morrissey and Bono to the fashion designers Hedi Slimane and Christopher Bailey. The band’s second album is due out in May and don’t let the pretty-boy looks put you off. New single “Hey, Hey Lover” bodes well.

Keep music live

An article on the Quietus website was the subject of much debate last week – not least for suggesting that guest lists and band riders need to become things of the past if independent music venues are to survive. The piece – by Andy Inglis, former manager of the ­Luminaire – certainly opened a can of worms. This week’s one to watch is Noah Francis Johnson. a 51-year-old former boxer who releases his debut solo album at the end of this month. Watch the video for “Say You Love Me”
