Can One Direction trounce Avicci's fastest-selling single of 2013 with 'Best Song Ever'?

It’s a song title that smacks of Simon Cowell-like levels of self-satisfaction. But One Direction, who are represented by the X Factor mogul’s Syco label, do not appear to have done themselves a disservice by calling their latest single “Best Song Ever” as it has rocketed into second place in the midweek charts and been watched 12.3 million times on Vevo in its first 24 hours.

Having been released on Monday, the “Best Song Ever” is currently at number two in the UK charts according to the Official Charts Company. It has yet to overtake Avicci’s “Wake Me Up” which last week became the fastest-selling single of 2013 and is currently outselling One Direction’s offering by 26,000 copies.

But analysts predict that the manufactured boy band, who have had three previous number one singles, could overtake superstar DJ and producer Avicci before the weekly charts are revealed on Sunday.

The “Best Song Ever” video, a spoof which features Harry, Louis and Niall as US record company execs, Liam as a Louie Spence-inspired choreographer called Leeroy, and Zayn as ‘Veronica’ the sexy assistant, broke Vevo records by amassing 12.3 million views on its first day and has since had nearly 19 million hits.

They have pushed Robin Thicke’s million-selling single “Blurred Lines” down to number three in the singles chart, with John Newman down one place at number four with “Love Me Again”. Swedish electric pair Icona Pop is at number five with “I Love It” featuring Charli XCX.

1D’s fellow X Factor runner-up Jahmene Douglas is on course for the top spot in the album charts with his debut LP, which features ten covers, Love Never Fails.

The 22-year-old former Asda shop assistant, who came second to James Arthur on ITV’s flagship reality TV singing contest in December, is on track to knock Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines into second place.

Jay-Z’s Magna Carta Holy Grail is currently at number three, Passenger’s All The Little Lights is in fourth place and former Disney princess Selena Gomez is new in at number five with her debut solo album Stars Dance.

The Rolling Stones are back in the album charts at number 15 with Hyde Park Live. The 19-track record features highlights from their concerts on 6 and 13 July.
