Like Madonna and Lady GaGa before her, it appears that Miley Cyrus has managed to turn controversy into chart success.

The singer, who has been the world's most talked-about pop star since her performance at the MTV VMAs in August, is on course to top both the UK singles and albums charts this weekend.

"Wrecking Ball" tops the midweek singles charts, having sold 62,000 copies so far this week.

Her ballad, which comes accompanied by a controversial video, leads Eminem's "Berzerk" by 18,000 copies.

Conor Maynard's "R U Crazy" is in third place, followed by the Saturdays' Disco Love and OneRepublic's current number one, "Counting Stars".

Cyrus topped the charts earlier this year with "We Can't Stop", the first single from her album Bangerz.

Bangerz sits atop the midweek album chart, meaning Cyrus could bag the first singles-albums number one double of the year.

The American star is fending off competition from Chase & Status, whose Brand New Machine record is at number two, with Haim's Days Are Gone at three.
