George The Poet releases new video for the Prince's Trust
The video was released with the 2015 Youth Index that aims to gauge the wellbeing of the UK's young people
Harlesden-born performer George The Poet has written and released a new video for the Prince’s Trust that uses poetry to talk about the emotional problems faced by a large percentage of the UK’s young people.
The poem titled Only One You, was released last week and follows the Prince’s Trust’s 2015 Youth Index that found that one in 10 young people often felt too anxious to leave the house and over half worried about everyday situations.
In the video, 23-year-old George The Poet, real name George Mpanga, describes the loneliness and anxiety felt by many young people.
He also touches on his own experiences and how writing poetry and having a focus helped to “un-trap his mind.”
He decided to focus on his poetry after finishing his studies and was signed by Island Records in 2013.
Since then, his career has gone from strength-to-strength and last year he was named as one of 15 nominees for the BBC’s Sound of 2015.
Discussing the project, George the Poet said: “When i saw the results of the youth index I wasn’t surprised by the pain that young people have admitted to feeling.
“Life, for my generation, isn’t as easy as others make out. i think it’s harder. that’s why i’m glad i could write and film this poem to remind young people that they do deserve good things in life and, if they work hard, anything is possible.”
Last week, The Prince’s Trust released their annual Youth Index that aims to gauge the wellbeing of the UK’s young people.

In the study based on interviews from over 2,000 16-25-year-olds, it found that bullying, unemployment and lack of confidence all contributed to anxiety in a large percentage of Britain’s young people.
As well as the study discovering that over half worried about everyday situations, the study also found out that half of all 16-25-year-olds admit to avoid meeting new people and one fifth said they “fall apart emotionally on a regular basis.”
Reflecting on the project, Paul Brown, director at The Prince’s Trust, said: “George is passionate about inspiring the current generation of young people through music and we are extremely grateful for his support on this year’s report. What he produced for us was a truly stunning and empowering poem, which really brings home some of the issues that young people face in the UK today.
“There are thousands of young people across the country who might be feeling alone and anxious about the future, not sure where to look for help. By writing something that young people can relate to, we hope that George will inspire those young people who need our help the most.”
