The heavy reverb and auto-tune style of rapping popularised by Migos, Future, Young Thug etc is everywhere in rap right now, even permeating Kanye West’s new album The Life of Pablo with guests from Ty Dolla $ign and Desiigner.
There’s nothing wrong with it per se, and there’s no reason why vocals can’t or shouldn’t be used for musical rather than lyrical effect, but boy is the style easy to take the piss out of.
YouTuber Crank Lucas did a solid job on YouTube, spitting some freestyle fire that includes unintelligible lines like: “Badaey eat-a da morny, u kno a n*gga ain’t hungry / i’m in the moo for da boo, i’m bouta count up da money”.
It’s basically a much simpler version of Hopsin’s excellent ‘No Words’ diss track (below), which opens with him saying: “Man, rap today f*cking sucks bad, I don’t give a f*ck what anybody says. These fools ain’t spitting no type of dope sh*t, but that’s not even the bad part, they’re not even saying words anymore! They just got a hard ass f*cking beat to trick dumbasses like you to make you think you like that sh*t.”
Snoop Dogg shares his sentiments it seems:
