Ibiza's tourism chiefs not happy with Mike Posner's 'typecasting' hit 'I Took a Pill in Ibiza'

The song features the lyrics 'you don’t want to be high like me'

Mike Posner’s “I Took A Pill In Ibiza” caused controversy upon its release, with many questioning the BBC’s judgement in adding Seeb’s remix of the song to their A-list because, ya’know, it’s about taking a pill.

Although the lyrics clearly follow the negative consequences of taking ecstasy - which is the reason the track made it to Radio 1 - tourism chiefs in Ibiza are annoyed the Spanish holiday isle is being characterised by such debauchery.

“We have invited the author of this song to discover Ibiza because we have much more to offer besides the nightlife which is known worldwide,” tourism director Vicent Ferrer told AFP.

“We have museums, beaches, culture, gastronomy, we have a wide offer but unfortunately we have been typecast this way. Unfortunately someone who wants to consume pills or alcohol can be found in any tourist destination, the fact that it is only us who are pigeonholed does not seem fair.”

The music video for the song, which includes the lyrics “you don’t want to be high like me”, features a man with papier mâché head going out clubbing, having sex in toilets, and helping a friend as they throw up.

Last year, MTV were made to drop fans to film a reality TV show on Ibiza following complaints from local officials. The show would have placed numerous young people in a holiday home along with an unrelenting supply of alcohol.

Unfortunately for the tourism chiefs, Ibiza has become synonymous with partying, particularly in Britain. 2.5 million people visit the isle every year, a third of whom are British.
