Following the explosive London leg of Justin Bieber’s tour last week the singer has cancelled a concert in Portugal.

Tonight’s gig at Lisbon’s Pavilhão Atlântico will go ahead but Tuesday's gig has been called off owing to "unforeseen circumstances".

The show’s cancellation was reportedly due to slow ticket sales.

The full statement reads: "Due to unforeseen circumstances, Justin Bieber was forced to cancel the second performance in Portugal, March 12. The Canadian singer is eager to play for the Portuguese fans on March 11.”

Ticket-holders for the cancelled performance are entitled to a refund if they claim within a month.

It has been a tumultuous few days for the 19-year-old “Baby” singer. He was roundly criticised after turning up two hours late for a gig at the O2 last Monday; he collapsed on stage with “breathing problems” at a subsequent performance at the venue on Thursday evening before being hospitalised; and on Friday he was filmed aggressively confronting a paparazzo as he left a London hotel.

He took to Twitter to explain the altercation: "Sometimes when people r shoving cameras in your face all day and yelling the worst thing possible at u … well I'm human," he said. "The press made things look nuts but really I have enjoyed London."

Earlier last week the singer received a storm of abuse from fans, many of whom were young children, who had paid £70 to see him when he turned up late for his performance.

He left thousands of fans waiting for two hours before starting his set at 10.22 on Monday night. Many were forced to leave prior to the end of the performance or risk being stranded in Greenwich due to transport constraints.

On Tuesday Bieber apologised to his 35 million Twitter followers for the furore but denied he had been two hours late.

In a series of Tweets, he said: “Waking up to a crazy day. Last night I was scheduled after three opening acts to go on stage at 9.35 not 8.30, but because of some technical issues I got on at 10.10. So I was 40 minutes late to stage. There is no excuse for that and I apologise for anyone we upset.”

Bieber added: “My relationship with the media is not always easy but I'm trying” and said “since I have been here it hasn't been easy with the press at times.”

Bieber said: “However it was (a) great show and I'm proud of that…I'm all about the music and the performance and I respect my fans.”
