On Margaret Thatcher's funeral day her 'favourite song' '(How Much Is That) Doggie in the Window?' marks 60 years since topping the charts

Forget about “Ding Dong! the Witch is Dead”, today marks the 60th anniversary of Margaret Thatcher’s favourite song “(How Much Is) That Doggie in the Window?” topping the charts.

Lita Roza’s version of the novelty song topped the UK singles chart on 17 April 1953, making Roza the first British female artist to reach number one. Thatcher would have been 28 when “(How Much Is) That Doggie in the Window?” was released.

The former Prime Minister revealed her preference for the song in Smash Hits magazine. She previously claimed that Rolf Harris’ “Two Little Boys” was her favourite song on a radio show in 1979.

Thatcher also admitted to liking Percy Sledge’s “When A Man Loves A Woman” and claimed to be a fan of Cliff Richard, who she said “had done wonders”.

Commentators have suggested that Thatcher chose “(How Much Is) That Doggie in the Window?” as an expression of her conservatism and interest in free-market economics.
